Increased demand in Alberta has encouraged Lafarge Canada, Inc. to invest $60 million to expand capacity at its northern Alberta precast operations. Plant capacity will be more than doubled in this project, which will break ground this year. The new site will use state-of-the-art technology, including the latest automation technology comprising robotics and full-scale computer-aided design and manufacturing.

Meanwhile, in southern Alberta, the Calgary plant is also being upgraded with new capacity and automation technology.

“The construction industry is demanding more of our precast concrete solutions to fulfill building and infrastructure growth.  Precast offers unique benefits in the construction, design and procurement phases.  In addition, end users gain with energy efficiency, long life and safety,” said René Thibault, CEO of Lafarge in Western Canada.

The new capacity will be designed to incorporate the latest sustainability concepts and methods. Lafarge utilises the Canadian Precast Concrete Institute’s Sustainable Plant programme to measure its environmental impact.

This announcement follows the news earlier this week that Lafarge Canada, Inc. had acquired eight ready-mix manufacturing plants in the Ontario area from James Dick Construction Ltd.
