Lower carbon cement helps to reduce GHG emissions in British Columbia
The cement sector in British Columbia, Canada, has reported that Contempra™, a lower carbon cement, makes up almost 50% of domestic cement consumption in the region, just two years after it was introduced. Contempra reduces CO2 emissions by 10%, and the use of Contempra-based concrete in BC has cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 23 000 tpa. It is produced at Lafarge’s Richmond cement plant and at Lehigh Hanson’s Delta plant.
“Contempra is a shining example of the cement industry’s continued commitment to innovation and to lowering our collective environmental footprint. We are delighted with the market’s enthusiastic response and with the tremendous strides both Lafarge and Lehigh Hanson have made in establishing this lower carbon cement as the cement of choice in British Columbia,” commented Michael McSweeney, President and CEO of the Cement Association of Canada.
Construction projects that have utilised the lower carbon cement thus far include the Arthur Erickson Building, the Wall Center False Creek Development and ONNI’s Evelyn master-planned community in Vancouver.
