Mineral Industry Surveys cement report

The monthly report from Mineral Industry Surveys provides data on the shipments of cement to final customers and the production of clinker in the United States from January 2014 through July 2015.1 Data on the imports of cement and clinker for July 2015 and the year through July are also provided.

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in July 2015 were about 9.3 million metric t, up slightly from the level in July 2014. Shipments for the year through July totalled 50.0 million t, up by 3.4% from the same period in 2014. The leading producing States for portland and blended cement in July were Texas, California, Missouri, Michigan, and Alabama, in descending order. The leading cement-consuming States received about 37% of the July shipments.

Clinker production totalled 7.0 million t in July 2015, down by about 3.0% from the output in July 2014. Production for the year through July was 42.3 million t, up by 3.4% from the same period in 2014. The leading clinker-producing States in July were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama.

Masonry cement shipments in July 2015 of about 219 000 metric t were up slightly from those of July 2014. Shipments for the year through July were 1.3 million t, up slightly from the same period in 2014. The leading masonry cement consuming States were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, and Georgia, and these received almost 52% of July’s shipments.

Data for clinker imports into the Seattle, WA, and the Detroit, MI, customs districts do not include material trucked in from Canada on an informal entry basis and, likewise, imports of cement into the El Paso, TX, district exclude significant informal entries. July 2015 imports of cement and clinker of about 1.1 million t were 13% higher than those in July 2014. Imports for the year through July totalled 6.0 million t, up by about 33% from the same period in 2014.
