High demand for concrete noise barriers

Demand for noise barriers in the US is forecast to rise by 3.7% annually, to 9.5 million ft2 in 2019, and will be valued at US$191 million, due to population growth in rural and suburban areas. Highways account for the vast majority of outdoor noise barrier installations in the US, closely followed by airports.

With lower land costs and the promise of convenient highway access, home builders are erecting residences and commercial structures in proximity to highways and roads. In response to this growth, state departments of transportation will erect outdoor noise barriers alongside highways to enhance the quality of life for homeowners and employees in the surrounding buildings.

These and other trends are presented in Outdoor Noise Barriers, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc.

Concrete products dominate noise barrier demand, with 92% of the total in 2014. Concrete is often specified due to its moderate cost, ready availability and sound absorbing qualities. Precast concrete panels continue to be the most popular.
