Lafarge acquires two aggregate docks in North America

The owner of the Sargent Docks and Terminal Inc., William G Weber, has signed an agreement with Lafarge North America, Inc. regarding the sale of two docks on the Saginaw River in Michigan. Webber will continue to own the docks under a ‘definitive agreement’, but Lafarge will run the day-to-day operations and materials. Webber is also president of the Saginaw River Alliance, a group of 22 companies that use the waterways to move materials.
In the past five years shipping on the Saginaw River has seen a 52% decrease, due in part to the economy and the need for river dredging that limited cargo capacity of ships. Last year more than 200 000 yd3 of silt was dredged from the river between Bay City and Saginaw to allow larger ships and heavier loads to pass along the river. More than US$ 4 million has been spent on the dredging project so far, and another US$ 5 million has been spent to create a dredged material disposal facility on the Bay-Saginaw line.
Lafarge North America owns or operates 10 aggregate docks on the Great Lakes, four of which are in Michigan. The company’s North American communications director said by acquiring the docks Lafarge will be able to transport aggregates direct from its quarries to the jobsite and thus better serve its customers.
