Tarmac selects winner to demolish chimney

Tarmac will be demolishing its iconic 400 ft chimney at Westbury on the 18 September, having selected the winner from a drawing competition launched in April.

Lily Hope Sargent from Westbury Church of England Junior School won the competition. She will have the unique opportunity to press the button to demolish the chimney.

The competition was entered by over 600 local school children. Staff from Wiltshire Council and Tarmac had the task of selecting 30 finalists from a variety of drawings, painting and collages illustrating both the company’s chimney and the White Horse, both based in Wiltshire. The winning entries were kudged by 3 VIPs – Dr Andrew Murrison MP, Baroness Scott of Bybrook, OBE leader of Wiltshire Council and Stuart Wykes, Tarmac's land and natural resources director.Stuart Wykes, who chose the final winner from some truly excellent entries, said: "We received a fantastic level of interest in the project from local schoolchildren and are delighted to be able to give Lily this opportunity. We’re looking forward to a unique event in September which will take place after extensive planning to ensure the safety of all involved.”
