HeidelbergCement extends Shanks Group alternative fuel contract

World Cement,

HeidelbergCement has extended its fuel contract with Shanks Group plc for a further six years. Icopower, part of Shanks’ Solid Waste Division, will supply HeidelbergCement with 54 000 tpy of its ICOPOWER® energy pellets. These will be used to power the cement manufacturer’s kilns.

Shanks uses commercial waste and a unique combination of sorting, drying and pelletising technology to ensure that the high calorific pellets meet strict production specifications. According to Shanks, the pellets are not classified as a waste product in the Netherlands due to their specific and constant chemical composition.

The company has also announced that it is investing in a 2300 m2 storage shed at its Icova site in Amsterdam, with completion scheduled for September. The shed will store the ICOPOWER® energy pellets before they are transported to customers in Scandinavia.

“The extension of this important contract is in line with our strategy of making more from waste,” said Michael van Hulst, Managing Director of Shanks’ Commercial Division. “It provides us with a guaranteed outlet for our energy pellets for the next six years and also generates cost savings through increased efficiencies. The production of these high-quality energy pellets is an excellent example of Shanks being a leading waste-to-product company.”
