Semen Indonesia celebrates ground-breaking of new packing plant

Cement manufacturer Semen Indonesia has broken ground on a new packing plant in East Kalimantan. The plant, with nearby port, will be equipped with a rotary packer with a capacity of 2200 bags per hour and two 6000 t silos. Construction is expected to take less than two years, with start-up anticipated in 4Q 2014.

Last year Indonesia’s cement consumption grew 15% to 55 million t, and this trend is set to continue. Cement sales in Kalimantan grew 21% in 2012 to 4.07 million t, while in January sales were up 19% to just under 350 000 t.

Semen Indonesia is the country’s largest cement manufacturer and this marks its 15^th packing plant, with two more under construction in addition to the one in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. In addition, the company, which recently changed its name from Semen Gresik, has the capacity to produce 28.3 million tpa of cement. Semen Indonesia is 51% owned by the Indonesian government.
